Tuesday 7 – Saturday 11 November

We are delighted to present this year’s Sound of St Martin’s Autumn Festival, a series of concerts across the season of Remembrance featuring the resident choirs of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

The Festival begins with Handel’s beautiful Dixit Dominus (Tuesday 7 November) performed by St Martin’s Chorus and St Martin’s Baroque Players. Other highlights include a performance of John Betjeman and Jim Parker’s Banana Blush (Thursday 9 November – see below for more details) and Fauré’s sublime Requiem (Friday 10 November) by the Choral Scholars of St Martin-in-the-Fields.

To conclude the Festival, there is a performance of Bach’s Mass in B minor (Saturday 11 November) in an exciting collaboration between our professional choir St Martin’s Voices and the Academy of St Martin in the Fields.

Walton Façade
Thursday 9 November

In 1974, the Poet Laureate, Sir John Betjeman, became an unlikely pop star, recording his verse to music by Jim Parker for the LP Banana Blush. It became a cult classic and modern pop icons Jarvis Cocker and Suggs are among many who cherish the album.

In a very special performance, St Martin-in-the-Fields presents the most complete live performance of Banana Blush for over 30 years. Jim Parker’s original handwritten scores will be published for the first time, with some missing pieces reconstructed by Jim especially for this performance. It will be paired with another playful interweaving of words and music, Façade – Dame Edith Sitwell’s eccentric poetry set to music by William Walton.

The pieces are narrated by BBC Radio 4 regulars Carole Boyd (The Archers) and Zeb Soanes (The News Quiz), with accompaniment from St Martin’s Players and direction from Andrew Earis.
