The Sing for Freedom Choir with Special Guests the London Arab Band

A programme of music and song from around the globe on the theme of Belonging

The Sing for Freedom Choir are an inspirational group of torture survivors and friends who sing together in a spirit of joy and hope, in solidarity with all those who are oppressed.  They have performed at venues around the UK including Union Chapel, the Royal Festival Hall, the Queen Elizabeth Hall, the Tilbury Carnival, the Tower of London and Milton Court in the Barbican.  They regularly perform for the finale of Refugee Week in June.

London Arab Band
Part of the London Arab Orchestra, who are based in the UK. Founded to spread Arab musical culture globally, it explores classical, traditional Arab music and Arabic & Andalusian Mowashshahat, appealing to diverse audiences. The ensemble features traditional Arab instruments including the oud, qanun, ney, and darbuka alongside classical Western instruments, creating a rich soundscape. Their repertoire spans timeless classics and new compositions, reflecting East-West musical dialogue. Believing in music’s power for cultural rapprochement, the orchestra aims to bridge cultural divides and foster mutual understanding, promoting a shared sense of humanity through their innovative approach to music.

Jeremy Haneman, conductor Sing for Freedom Choir
Jeremy is a conductor and musical director who specialises in choral and operatic repertoire. He is the Co-Director of Together Productions, a not for profit that produces ground-breaking work using music and the arts to inspire social change including the Singing Our Lives project that works every year with hundreds of singers from refugee and local backgrounds to compose and perform new music. Jeremy Haneman was the Community Chorus Director for the Royal Opera House Covent Garden 2011-2020 and is the Artistic Director of Thames Opera Company.  As well as musical director for the prize-winning Taylor Wessing and Linklaters choirs, he is the co-founder and conductor of the Mixed Up Chorus and he has led many other choirs including the National Symphony Chorus of Ireland, Morley College Choir and the Amici Chamber Choir. Jeremy has also been the musical director for One Day One Choir, a global annual movement for World Peace Day that involves over a million singers from all around the world, and he has been visiting Professor of choral conducting at the Guildhall School of Music working with vocal and composition students. Jeremy is a graduate of the Sydney Conservatorium of Music and he did the inaugural Master of Music in choral conducting at the University of Cambridge. He is a Practitioner Council member of the Association of British Choral Directors, a Fellow of the Royal Society for the Arts and Trustee of the London Gay Men’s Chorus.

Basel Saleh, conductor London Arab Band
Saleh is a distinguished composer, singer, and oud player, celebrated for his unique fusion of Arabic and Western classical music. He is the conductor of both the London Arab Orchestra and the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians. Saleh holds a Master’s degree in Music Education and possesses extensive experience in leading orchestras and choirs. His compositions have been performed by prestigious ensembles such as the BBC Singers Choir, Liverpool Philharmonic Orchestra, and Truro Sinfonia.

Saleh has collaborated with renowned international artists, including Damon Albarn, Paul Weller, Martin Glover ‘Youth’, Susheela Raman, and Sam Mills. His leadership of the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians has brought them to prominent stages at globally acclaimed festivals such as Glastonbury, WOMAD, Cambridge, and the Netherlands Amsterdam Festival.

Sanaa Wahbah is a distinguished musician who graduated from the High Institute of Music in Damascus in 2001, specializing in the Double Bass and Kanun. She spent two years as a Kanun teaching assistant at the institute, imparting her knowledge to aspiring musicians. Over the past 23 years, Sanaa has performed at some of the world’s most prestigious opera houses as a Kanun and Double Bass player. Currently, she is a member of the London Arab Orchestra.
Her impressive recording credits include the Kanun solos for major film scores, such as the Aladdin movie starring Will Smith and The Eternals featuring Angelina Jolie and Salma Hayek. Additionally, she recorded the Kanun solos for the opening day of Expo Dubai 2020.

Julia ‘A Katarina is a mezzo-soprano, oud player and cellist who taught for nearly 4 years at music schools in Palestine. She taught singing, both Western classical repertoire and Arabic song, cello and music theory and sang in church concerts around the country. Previously she co-founded and toured with a chamber opera company, singing the title role in Gluck’s Orfeo ed Eurydice. Julia has completed 3 opera courses, including a Diploma at Birkbeck College, University of London and has an MA in Islamic Law from the Islamic College, London, and an MSc in Applied Music Psychology from Roehampton University, where she gave many recitals and performed a title role in their first opera production, Hansel und Gretel. She also studied and performed Qawwali internationally with the late Mehmood Sabri. In 2016 she founded her social enterprise, UnityMusic, touring England, Germany, Greece, Oman, Palestine, Lebanon and Sweden. She plays cello in orchestral concerts of songs from all over the Arabic speaking world conducted by Bassel Saleh, having performed in Ealing and Kensington Town Halls and the Barbican Hall. Julia has also played with the Orchestra of Syrian Musicians at the Brighton Dome and the Arabic Music Academy in London at St John’s Smith Square and now also plays cello and oud in the Orchestra from Everywhere with composer Priti Paintal in Kent and played cello in Satyam Shivam Sundaram with Shafeeq Shajahan in the Soho Rising festival.
