In this lunchtime recital, harpsichordist Nathaniel Mander performs Bach’s Goldberg Variations, a masterpiece of Baroque music, consisting of an aria and 30 variations. Composed for harpsichord, it’s renowned for its complexity, virtuosity, and ingenious structure. The variations showcase a wide range of musical styles and techniques, from intricate contrapuntal writing to expressive ornamentation. The work is named after Johann Gottlieb Goldberg, the harpsichordist for whom Bach composed it, and it remains one of Bach’s most beloved and enduring compositions, cherished by musicians and listeners alike for its beauty and brilliance.

Harpsichordist Nathaniel Mander is known for his expressive and virtuosic style. He trained at the Royal Academy of Music with Carole Cerasi and is recognised as one of the leading keyboard artists of his generation. His passion for the 18th century has led him to devote himself to the keyboard instruments of the time and through his studies at home and abroad he has developed a very personal and authentic touch. His 2022 CD of Bach’s Goldberg Variations received great critical acclaim and his performances have taken him throughout the UK and Europe and to the United States and South America.
