Jonathan Leibovitz (clarinet) & Joseph Havlat (piano)
Friday 23 May 2025
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Brahms’s warmly lyrical and introspective second sonata is at the centre of this programme of cornerstones of the romantic repertoire for clarinet, introduced by the shimmering, impressionistic textures of Debussy’s Première Rhapsodie. In contrast, Denisov’s Solo Sonata pushes the instrument’s technical and expressive boundaries and finally, Poulenc’s Sonata encapsulates his characteristic blend of wit, melancholy, and French charm.

He frequently gives recitals across Israel and Europe, including most recently at the Alte Oper Frankfurt, Konzerthaus Berlin, Concertgebouw Amsterdam and Wigmore Hall.
Jonathan’s debut album ‘Eastern Reflections’ was released in August 2024 on Delphian Records, and was recorded alongside violinist Charlotte Saluste-Bridoux and pianist Joseph Havlat.
An avid chamber musician Jonathan founded the Avir Wind Quintet, and has collaborated with the ‘Mietar Ensemble’, Israeli Contemporary Players and Quatuor Agate among others, including performances at prestigious festivals including Verbier Festival, Brandenburgische Sommerkonzerte, Festspiele Mecklenburg-Vorpommern and the Crusell, Rauna and Hauho Festivals in Finland.
Highlights of Jonathan’s 2024/25 season include his debut with the Munich Symphony, and performances at the Münster Neue Namen Series and with the Kaleidoscope Ensemble in the UK.
In recent seasons Jonathan has performed in concerto with the Lucerne Symphony Orchestra, Gävle Symphony Orchestra, Slovak State Philharmonic Košice, London Mozart Players and Jyväskylä Sinfonia. He has also previously appeared as soloist with the Ostrobothnian Chamber, Lapland Chamber and Kuopio Symphony Orchestras working with conductors including Elena Schwarz, Adrien Perruchon and Tung-Chieh Chuang.
Jonathan is also extremely grateful to Andrea König for her support during his time with YCAT.
Joseph Havlat is an Australian pianist and composer from Hobart, who is based in London. He works frequently as a soloist, having given recitals at Wigmore Hall, Queen Elizabeth Hall and King’s Place, and also chamber musician, having performed with artists such as James Ehnes and Steven Isserlis. He has released CDs on the LSO Live label (the premiere recording of John Adams’ two-piano work ‘Roll Over Beethoven’), Métier (music by Michael Finnissy) and Delphian Records (Schubert violin and piano works) amongst others. Passionate about modern and contemporary music, he has collaborated with such composers as Thomas Adès, Sir Harrison Birtwistle, Gerald Barry and Hans Abrahamsen. As a composer, his music often explores the sounds of the natural world, imbued with the harsher shapes of human modernity. He has written music spanning from solo voice to large ensemble, including for his own Ensemble x.y, of which he was a founding member. He grows ferns.
