Crypt Close-Ups: The Gesualdo Six – Fading
Tuesday 7 January 7:30pm | 9:15pm
Grab a drink and get close-up to artists performing by candlelight in St Martin’s dramatic crypt. These informal concerts are immersive and atmospheric and are a great way to experience sublime music in a whole new way, in the intimate candlelit surroundings of the St Martin’s Crypt.
“Before the ending of the day / Creator of the world, we pray”. The hours of darkness can be a time of anxiety or a chance for peaceful reflection – but for centuries, believers have sung through their hopes and fears in the music of Compline. That’s the inspiration behind this exquisite concert from The Gesualdo Six: a timeless journey into the music of the night from Tallis to Tormis, sung by candlelight in the nocturnal atmosphere of St Martin-in-the-Fields’ ancient crypt. From the prayers of Hildegard of Bingen to the romantic dreamworld of Schubert and Rheinberger, these are sounds to illuminate the soul.
This concert lasts 55 minutes with no interval.
