Crypt Close-Ups: Mark Padmore & Morgan Szymanski

Tuesday 17 September 2024

8:30 pm - 10:30 pm

Grab a drink and get close-up to artists performing by candlelight in St Martin’s dramatic crypt. These informal concerts are immersive and atmospheric and are a great way to experience sublime music in a whole new way, in the intimate candlelit surroundings of the St Martin’s Crypt.

Take John Dowland, the melancholy genius of Tudor music, whose ravishing lute songs distil sorrow into unforgettable sweetness. Add Franz Schubert, the greatest songwriter of the Romantic age, and a supreme master of poetry and emotion. Now imagine them coming together in St Martin’s crypt, in a beautiful, bittersweet recital from a legend among British tenors – Mark Padmore – and Morgan Szymanski, one of our century’s finest classical guitarists.

Haunting miniatures by Alec Roth and Benjamin Britten add their own wild magic to an evening of song at its most intimate, and luminous.

Songs by John Dowland and Schubert Folksong arrangements by Britten Alec Roth A Road Less Travelled (London premiere).
