Ian Zhao and Joachim Lim (cello and piano)

Friday 11 April 2025

1:00 pm - 2:00 pm

Fauré’s three short pieces offer a glimpse into the French Romantic style: the tender Berceuse, the virtuosity of Papillon, and the dreamlike poignancy of Après un Rêve, inspired by a vision of love and longing. Shostakovich’s Cello Sonata in D minor, a gripping work from 1934 that balances lyrical introspection with biting intensity, reflects the composer’s personal struggles and the shadow of Soviet oppression. The programme opens with perhaps the best-loved of Bach’s monumental cello suites.
