Kayu Quartet: Bach and Beethoven
Friday 14 March 2025
1:00 pm - 2:00 pm
Webern’s Langsamer Satz, written in 1905 during his student years, reflects the late Romantic tradition; it was inspired by his love for his future wife and captures the lush tonalities of that period before he turned to more radical works. Beethoven’s String Quartet Op. 59 No. 1 was commissioned by the Russian ambassador Count Razumovsky, blending classical elegance with folk traditions. The programme opens with one of Bach’s poignant chorales.

The Kayu Quartet was formed in the summer of 2023 through the Royal College of Music’s introduction to its Masters in Performance program. In a short time, they have already embraced numerous performance opportunities at various venues, presenting diverse repertoire ranging from Mendelssohn’s lyrical String Quartet No.2 to the intensity of Shostakovich’s String Quartet No.8. Their musical growth has been enriched through close collaboration with distinguished RCM faculty members, including players from the renowned Marmen Quartet.
