The Conversation: Bettany Hughes

Tuesday 25 March 2025

6:30 pm - 7:30 pm

Seven Wonders of the Ancient World

The Conversation is a series of weekly events talking about conflict and empathy, inequality and power, climate crisis and wonder through storytelling and action. The first half of the evening is an interview, which is followed by the host and guest joining the audience around tables to take the conversation further.  Everyone is welcome.

The Great Pyramid at Giza. The Hanging Gardens of Babylon. The Temple of Artemis. The statue of Zeus at Olympia. The Mausoleum of Halikarnassos. The Colossus at Rhodes. The Lighthouse of Alexandria.  The Seven Wonders of the World were staggeringly audacious impositions on our planet, expressions of power and ambition. They were also brilliant adventures of the mind, test cases of the reaches of human imagination. Now only the pyramid remains virtually intact. How might we conceive of wonders today? What criteria might we use? What’s changed?

Bettany Hughes is an award-winning historian, author and broadcaster. Her books include Venus and Aphrodite, Istanbul, The Hemlock Cup and Helen of Troy. She has made many documentaries for the BBC, Channel 4, National Geographic, the Discovery and History channels.

Chaired by Peter Florence.
