Academy of St Martin in the Fields with Bruce Liu
Saturday 15 February 2025
7:30 pm - 9:30 pm
The Academy of St Martin in the Fields is joined by the first prize winner of the 2021 Chopin Piano Competition Bruce Liu before they head on tour to the USA. An exclusive for this London date, Liu will perform two concerti from the tour, Shostakovich Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor, Op.35 and Mozart Piano Concerto No. 9 “Jeunehomme”, or “Jenamy”.
Liu’s ‘playing of breath-taking beauty’ (BBC Music Magazine) has secured his reputation as one of the most exciting talents of his generation, with a ‘rock star status in the classical music world’ (The Globe and Mail).
Named by Alfred Brendel as ‘one of the greatest wonders of the world’, Mozart’s Piano Concerto No. 9 is filled with surprises, beginning right at the outset by the second bar, and richly entwining the soloist and orchestra. Known for years as ‘Jeunehomme’, it was revealed in 2003 that the mysterious identity was Victoire Jenamy, the talented pianist and daughter of the dancer and choreographer Jean-Georges Noverre. Completed by a young Shostakovich in 1933, Piano Concerto No. 1 started life as a concerto for trumpet, adding a piano to create a double concerto, with the sparkling virtuoso piano taking precedence.
Programme to include:
Shostakovich – Piano Concerto No. 1 in C minor
Mozart – Piano Concerto No. 9
